KATHMANDU, Aug 3: Small parties have demanded that the UML to change its stance in order to give an outlet to the current political stalemate.

At a meeting with top UML brass, leaders from small parties urged the former to mend their fences with NC. “We also agree that Maoist leadership can´t be acceptable until the party completely detaches itself from its arms and armies but NC and UML should be able to give an alternative,” Chandra Dev Joshi of CPN (Samyukta), who was present in the meeting, told myrepublica.com. They also suggested the UML leaders to first finalize which one from the two parties -- NC and UML -- is to head the government.

“If you (UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal) can convince the NC, then you head the government or support the NC but don´t keep us in further confusion,” a leader present in the meeting quoted Joshi as saying in the meeting. Surya Bahadur Thapa of RJP supported his idea.

“Khanal neither said he would call his party´s CC meeting nor did he give any indication if he would change his stance,” a leader said.

Small parties also pushed Khanal to talk to Maoists also saying that he can be the right person to convince them as he maintains a good rapport with the Maoists.

Leaders from CPN (ML), CPN (Samyukta), Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP), among others, were present at the meeting with the UML. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel from the UML also attended the meeting.
