Singh, Bista win tennis title

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Piyush Singh and Abhilasha Bista on Thursday won the titles in their respective sections of the 11th Jayakar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament in the U-9 age group on Thursday.



Singh defeated Aadit Subedi 10-5, 10-6 in the final of U-9 boys´ singles held at the Satdobato Tennis Court while Bista saw off Aria Prasain 12-10, 10-2 in the U-9 girls´ singles final.[break]



Bista also secured a place in the final of U-10 girls´ singles, where she will meet Utsavi Joshi. Bista defeated Nima Roka 8-3 en route to the final while Joshi saw off Riyasha Baidya 8-1 in another semifinal.



Meanwhile, Bibhuti Karki set up a title clash with Mayanka Rana in the U-14 girls´ singles after both won their respective semifinal matches on Thursday.



Karki fought back from a set down to beat Anne Mathema 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 in their semifinal match. On the other hand, Rana advanced into the final with a straight sets victory over Bijisha Shrestha but she had a hard time dispatching off Shrestha 7-5, 7-6.



In the U-10 boys´ singles, Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya defeated Deep Rana 8-2, Swaraj KC saw off Sudan Lamichhane 8-5, Sulav Dhital beat Aadit Subedi 8-2 and Prasiddha Panjiyar defeated Pratham Manandhar 8-6 to secure semifinal berths.



The semifinal line-up of the U-16 boys´ singles was also completed on Thursday, with Ivanhoe Lissanevitch cruising through the quarterfinals while Yeoram Lee, Abhaya Gauchan and Brahmanda Singh Moktan registered hard-fought wins in their respective matches.



Lissanevitch hammered Ashish Agrawal 6-1, 6-0; Lee bounced back from a set down to defeat Abhishek Bastola 4-6, 6-3, 6-1; Gauchan edged out Aavash Malla 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Moktan struggled to beat Saksham Karki 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 in their quarterfinal matches.



In the quarterfinal matches of the U-14 boys´ singles, Saksham Karki defeated Pranav Kayastha 1-6, 6-1, 6-1; Ivanhoe Lissanevitch handed a double bagel to Chandraman Roka; Abhaya Gauchan beat Pranav Khanal 6-0, 7-6 and Avash Malla ousted Samrakshak Bhushan Bajracharya 6-4, 6-4 to advance into the semifinals.
