KATHMANDU, April 1: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shashank Koirala has said that he supports a Hindu nation but opposes the monarchy, citing repeated misuse of power by former King Gyanendra Shah.
Speaking briefly to the media at the Federal Parliament premises on Monday, Koirala emphasized that the former king had been given multiple opportunities but consistently misused authority. He expressed doubts if the former monarch would not abuse power again if reinstated.
“It is up to the people to decide how to move the system forward. I am in favor of a Hindu nation, but we don’t need a king,” Koirala said.
He also alleged that royalist elements were responsible for inciting the crowd during the recent Tikune incident and called for legal action against those involved.
