SC seeks five-point clarification from govt over squatters’ settlement demolition drive

The court has asked the government to clarify whether due legal procedures were followed during the eviction process and whether the right to housing was adequately protected.

KATHMANDU, May 5: The Supreme Court has sought a five-point clarification from the government regarding the removal of squatters’ settlements in the Kathmandu Valley.



A single bench of Justice Sunil Kumar Pokharel, during a preliminary hearing on a writ petition, directed the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, along with other concerned agencies, to submit a written response within 15 days.

The court has asked the government to clarify whether due legal procedures were followed during the eviction process and whether the right to housing was adequately protected.


It has also sought details on alternative arrangements for displaced families, including provisions for resettlement, food, healthcare, and children’s education.


Stating that the issue requires detailed deliberation, the court has summoned both parties for further hearings.
