KATHMANDU, Oct 17: In an effort to curb noise pollution caused by vehicles, the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police has launched a special campaign targeting loud horns and illegally modified motorcycle silencers.
According to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, over the past few days, more than 200 motorcycles producing loud noise through modified exhaust pipes have been seized from various parts of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur.
Valley police urge public to curb noise pollution
Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Navaraj Adhikari, said that legal action has been initiated against the seized motorcycles. “Noise pollution directly affects our daily lives,” he said. “Excessive motorcycle noise has led to sleeplessness, stress, and even fear among residents. We will now strictly monitor those who cause such disturbances under the pretext of entertainment.”
Although the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act, 2049 BS requires all vehicles to operate within the manufacturer’s prescribed standards, many motorcyclists have been violating this rule by replacing their silencers with loud, modified ones. As a result, the office said, strict enforcement has become necessary.
Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police (SP) Naresh Raj Subedi said that the ongoing campaign aims to reduce noise pollution and ensure a peaceful urban environment.
