KATHMANDU, June 8: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli held discussions today with the officials of the Land Issue Resolving Commission (LIRC) to review the progress of the LIRC’s work.

During the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, the LIRC briefed that it has been working in coordination with all three levels of government on tasks such as identifying landless Dalits, squatters, and unmanaged settlers; collecting data; verifying claims; conducting land surveys; resolving disputes; registering land; and distributing land ownership certificates.

In the meeting, which also included Minister for Land Management, Cooperative and Poverty Alleviation, Balram Adhikari, LIRC Chairperson Hari Prasad Rijal explained the criteria for identification. According to him, landless and squatter individuals are those who have not received any government land and have been residing for at least ten years. Similarly, unmanaged settlers must have been living and cultivating on government, public, or barren land for at least ten years to be eligible.

The LIRC officials noted that the passage of the bill amending some of Nepal’s land-related laws would facilitate their work further.

PM Oli expressed confidence that the bill, currently under parliamentary consideration, would be passed soon. He instructed the LIRC to move forward with the identification of landless Dalits, squatters, and unmanaged settlers in a planned and expedited manner.

The government had formed the LIRC on October 30.
