The government had called the meeting but the parties could not come to conclusion regarding the dispute on provision of one per cent votes of the valid ballots as a threshold. [break]
The Unified CPN (Maoist) and majority of the fringe parties are against the one per cent threshold while the Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), and some other political parties are for it.
UCPN-Maoist leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who had participated in the meeting presided by the chairman of the Interim Election Council (IEC) Khil Raj Regmi, said there would be no objection to his party if more and more parties participated in the election, as it was special election rather than general one.
He said it was better to declare date for the election instead of making debates on the threshold.
Similarly, NC leader, Dr. Minendra Rijal, and UML leader Agni Kharel opined that the practice of threshold was the global one and that it was compulsory for the CA election.
Rijal said they were for the provision of one per cent threshold while UML leader Kharel said the UML would protest if the provision was not included in the law.
Kharel said the identity of the Brahmins and Kshetris, including others, that were termed ´other´ communities in the past should be recognized.
The Election Commission had held a round of discussion with the political parties and submitted the laws recommended for the amendment to the government.
