Over 1,400 arrested in Kathmandu police sweep operation last month

The campaign was conducted across various parts of the capital, leading to the arrest of 199 women, 1,218 men, and three others.

KATHMANDU, June 17: The District Police Range (DPO), Kathmandu, arrested and took action against 1,410 individuals in a month-long ‘sweep operation’ carried out between mid-May and mid-June.



According to DPO Spokesperson Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, the campaign was conducted across various parts of the capital, leading to the arrest of 199 women, 1,218 men, and three others.


The operation was launched to curb crime and maintain peace and order in the city. During the drive, 21 women from Uganda, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Kenya were detained from the Thamel area for allegedly harassing domestic and foreign citizens and were subsequently deported.

In the same period, 1,160 cases were registered, including 257 serious and heinous crimes, 51 cases related to women, children, and senior citizens, 494 economic offences, and 358 other cases, police said.


One money laundering case is under investigation, while two cases related to hundi (illegal money transfer) were filed involving transactions worth Rs 2.075 million.


309 protests, thousands of Police deployed


Between mid-May and mid-June, Kathmandu witnessed 309 sit-ins, 77 protest programmes, six torch rallies, four relay hunger strikes, and three corner meetings. More than 10,000 police personnel were deployed to manage these activities.


DPO Kathmandu also seized goods worth Rs 2.399 million during crackdowns on revenue leakage and customs evasion, including green peas, coal, sunglasses, biscuits, mobile phones, and energy drinks.


In addition, four individuals were arrested with two firearms and 46 rounds of ammunition.


Altogether, 67,949 police personnel were deployed for mobile patrols, security checks, foot and motorcycle patrols, duty monitoring, and SRP operations, police said.
