CHITWAN, June 9: Seismologist Prof Dr Harihar Poudel has claimed that the minor aftershocks happening after the deadly April 25 earthquake would occur till next one and half months.

Poudel, the first PhD holder on Nepal's earthquake, said that the jolt of May 12 is a trigger aftershock while all other quakes after April 25 are aftershocks.

Aftershocks would continue at least for three months after the 7.6-magnitude earthquake but the aftershocks would not larger than the initial earthquake in the magnitude, Poudel claimed.

"The epicentre of 7.6-magnitude earthquake occurred on August 26, 1890 was Gorkha district and that too had wrecked havoc from Gorkha to Sindhupalchowk districts including Kathmandu and aftershocks were realised till three months of the major quake," Prof Dr Poudel said quoting the British Gazette.

He added that the aftershocks could continue for one and a half months now as the magnitude of the April 25 deadly earthquake was same that of 1890. RSS
