The tiger, which fled Chitwan National Park (CNP) probably after being defeated by other big cats, was lying dead in a bush by the river, confirmed Jagannath Singh, warden of Parsa Wildlife Reserve (PWR).[break]
The tiger, which was about 10 years old, had killed an elderly and attacked two domestic animals. Suk Bahadur Rai, 60, a resident of Manahari VDC-5 in Makawanpur district, was mauled to death on Friday.
CNP and PWR staffers had been tracing the tiger since he turned a man-eater. Four elephants were used to search for the man-eater.
According to PWR chief Singh, the dead tiger had multiple injuries to his body.
Singh presumed that the man eater had received the wounds in a fight with other tigers. Tigers usually fight to stake their claim over a certain area.
“The tiger which loses in the fight with another tiger runs away from the locality and ends up preying on domestic animals and human beings after entering human settlements,” said Singh. “Since these man-eaters develop the habit of hunting human beings, they should be caught as soon as possible,” he added.
According to Singh, they had intended to catch the man-eater alive but unfortunately they couldn´t.
“We will be able to know the exact cause of the tiger´s death after receiving the autopsy report,” said Singh. The tiger was buried near the PWR office after its autopsy, informed Singh.
CNP is the main habitat for tigers and they can found in the nearby PWR as well.
