The family of those killed in the tusker attack has said they would perform the final rites of the deceased only after the tusker is killed.[break]
“The CNP administration´s decision should be implemented immediately. We want the elephant killed without delay,” said Yam Kanta Bhusal, chief of Panchpandav Buffer Zone User Committee.
After the killing of the elderly couple on Saturday, local authorities had issued a shoot-at-sight order to kill Dhrube.
“We are searching for the tusker but with no luck,” said Bishnu Thapaliya, ranger at CNP. “To hunt him down, we need to track him in an open area, which is not an easy task,” added Thapaliya.
A team of more than 30 persons including security personnel and CNP officers have been mobilized to hunt down the tusker.
Before the killing of the elderly, search team officials had fitted a radio tracking device on the killer tusker and cut off one of his tusks.
The tusker is believed to have entered Rautahat.
Dr Narendramanbabu Pradhan, former Chief of CNP, said male elephants show abnormal and aggressive behavior during mating season which lasts only for a few months.
“But Dhrube´s abnormality is hard to understand. Mad elephants rarely cause massive destruction,” said Pradhan.
