Managing director of the center Ram Chandra Silwal said the center dismissed the daily wage workers employed at its offices in Sano Thimi, Pokhara, Dhangadhi, Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj to reduce the losses incurred by the center and address the problem of over-staffing.[break]
Silwal said the decision was taken as part of the 32-point strategy prepared to control the center’s losses which have mounted to the extent that the center can no longer bear with.
He added the center plans to lay off unnecessary staffs, stop unnecessary use of vehicles to save fuel cost, fetch more works from outside and print the textbook on time.
He said he has been trying to make the center self-dependent by making over for the losses it had incurred in the past. He said the new strategy aims at reducing the losses by up to Rs1 million to Rs 1.5 million every month.
However, JEMC Employees’ Union Chairman Chitra Raj Acharya accused Silwal of financial irregularity and the decision to lay off the staff was biased.
He said only the UML sympathizer employees have been laid off. He added the loss incurred by the center is the result of financial irregularities rather than over-staffing.
The center normally operates three shifts a day. By running the center only one shift from 10 am to 5 pm from today, Acharya said, Silwal is trying to push the center on the verge of collapse by not working to deliver the orders on time.
Acharya accused Silwal of taking commission by purchasing 2,000 tonnes of paper without tender from the Sahitya Prakashan which has been put on a black list by the parliament’s Public Accounts Committee.
