KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Former Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal has urged the Indian government not to impose a blockade on Nepal and that the southern neighbor can't deprive Nepal of its transit rights.

"I want to draw attention of the Modi government to the fact that transit right is Nepal's international right. So, India can't obstruct supplies to Nepal," CPN-UML leader Khanal said at an interaction organized by Reporters Club in Kathmandu on Friday. "Nepal-bound essential goods must be allowed to enter our country without hindrance."Stating that Nepal-bound cargo vehicles were stopped starting Thursday, Khanal demanded that India lift such blockade immediately.

He also said there was no point for a neighbouring country to express dissatisfaction over the contents of Nepal's constitution making progress and the contents of the constitution.

He said Nepal wants to further strengthen its ages-old relations with India based on the five principles of Panchsheel and would never compromise on its independence and sovereignty.

He argued that Nepal made its new constitution in a most democratic and transparent manner through a Constituent Assembly (CA). "We learnt from the constitution making experience of various countries but didn't seek anyone's blessings. We will implement the constitution at any cost come what may," said Khanal.

Khanal said that if India continued the blockade, Nepal will find various ways to reduce its impact.

Asked what are the options for Nepal in case of a prolonged blockade by India, Khanal quipped, "The severity of the situation will determine the course of action."

He claimed the protests launched by Madhes-based parties have no ground at all as the new constitution has already addressed their major demands. "The new constitution has adopted federalism and principle of proportional representation. Madhesi people wanted a Madhes province, which has already been carved," he said. "Citizenship issue has been properly addressed. So there is no point in launching protests."
