KATHMANDU, March 17: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has sent a formal letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to visit Nepal.

According to sources at Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the invitation letter was sent on Thursday evening. “This is a standing invitation. Secretary General Ban had expressed willingness to visit Nepal when Prime Minister Bhattarai extended invitation during his visit to New York last year,” said a source. [break]

Though Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who heads High Level Steering Committee for the Development of Greater Lumbini, informed media persons a few days ago that Ban is visiting Nepal on April 28, sources said there was no formal communication through diplomatic channel on this.

Sources said the date will be set at Ban´s convenience. He is scheduled to attend a function organized by the government for the development of Lumbini during the course of his visit.

“The visit is not solely meant for Lumbini, though,” confirmed one of the sources.

A meeting of the Committee Friday morning decided to invite the Secretary General through diplomatic channel. Minendra Rijal, a member of the committee, informed the media that the visit would happen after formal procedures.
