KATHMANDU, April 1: Eight Nepali citizens who had been lured by various promises and taken to Cambodia to work in illegal online scamming centers, casinos, and other unauthorized activities have been rescued and returned to Nepal. The rescue was carried out through the efforts of the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok with support from the Cambodian government and facilitated by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Cambodia. The group departed Cambodia on March 31 and landed at Tribhuvan International Airport on April 1.

The embassy has received reports that several Nepalis in Cambodia are working in online scams, other illegal activities, or overstaying their visas. The Nepali Embassy in Bangkok has urged citizens in such situations to contact NRNA Cambodia representatives for assistance: Shivaraj Parajuli: +855 12 215 578, Lal Singh Khadka: +855 93 203 666, Ramji Kumar Chhetri: +855 96 346 5788

Many Nepalis working in scamming centers have reported passport confiscation by employers or loss of passports during transfers. In such cases, the embassy issues a one-way travel permit free of charge to facilitate their return. Detailed information on this process is available at Nepal Embassy Bangkok – One-Way Trip Permit.

Tourism statistics show a rapid increase in Nepalis visiting Cambodia: from 101 in 2021 to 19,77 in 2022, 2,940 in 2023, 6,404 in 2024, and 9,676 in 2025. The embassy reiterated that Nepalis should only travel abroad for employment with official labor approval and avoid being lured by promises of quick and high earnings in countries like Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. The embassy also urged media and civil society to help spread this message to protect Nepali citizens abroad.
