Constable Surya Bahadur Thapa, 28, was stabbed in his chest while he was trying to take the fight between two groups under control. Police have detained six men who have been suspected of involvement in the crime. [break]
Thapa, who is from Khildi-6, of Arghakhanchi district, died from the stab wound in his right chest. Thapa, who collapsed after being stabbed, was rushed to District Hospital Tamghas for treatment. But he could not be saved.
Thapa was among the eight cops deployed to provide security at the fair. The eight tried to control a fight between youths of Nayagaon-3 and Nayagaon-8. Instead of controlling the fight, the cops found themselves encircled by 40 youths.
“After a youth of Nayagaon-3 was mercilessly beaten up, police were trying to disperse the youths of Nayagaon-8. But the police were attacked by more than forty youths,” said Inspector Om Prakash Chaudhary.
Chaudhary added that a police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Raj Kumar Baidwar reached the spot and took the situation under control.
Assistant sub-inspector Dhan Bahadur Raut, who led the police team providing security at the fair, said the fight between the youths started at 10:30 pm. Those involved in the fight were armed with spears and khukuri knives.
DSP Baidwar said police detained four people Tuesday night. And on Wednesday morning, two people who had fled their village following the incident were arrested from Thada, Arghakhanchi.
Police have been conducting raids in a bid to arrest more youths suspected of involvement in the crime.
