DoI to deport 12 Chinese nationals

KATHMANDU, April 15: The Department of Immigration (DoI) is preparing to deport at least 12 Chinese nationals who were arrested two years ago on the charge of possessing large amount of unaccounted US dollars.

The DoI informed that it was making necessary preparations for deporting the Chinese nationals and ban their re-entry to Nepal for a specific period.Those Chinese nationals were arrested while they were trying to return China with a large amount of US dollar bills.

"The case of deportation of the Chinese has reached out office," informed Kedar Neupane, Director General at the DoI.

The Chinese nationals have completed their jail term of two years. The Kathmandu District Court had also slapped a penalty of Rs 10.7 million on each of them under the immigration law. As per the law, they can be banned from re-entering Nepal for up to three years.

In their statement to the DoI, all of the 12 Chinese had told the authorities that they were unaware about the currency they were carrying. "I was in Nepal with a group of Chinese but I was not aware how the money came in my bag," said one of the Chinese in the investigation process at the DoI.

All foreigners must declare the currency and the amount of money they are carrying.

Currently, the Chinese are in the DoI custody awaiting deportation. According to the police report, all 12 Chinese had entered Nepal from Kodari border by land under tourist visas.
