KATHMANDU, Dec 24: Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and CPN-(Unified Marxist-Leninist) Chairman Jhalanath Khanal accompanied by another top UML leader held a secret meeting in the capital Wednesday evening at the residence of Ramesh Nath Pandey, foreign minister in the cabinet headed by then king Gyanendra. The three discussed ways of ending the protracted political deadlock and expediting the constitution-writing process, said an individual present at the meeting that lasted for three and half hours.

"The focus of the talks was on completing the task of constitution writing on time," he said. "The meeting concluded that the three major political parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML -- need to put aside their differences and come together to avoid the crisis that may befall the country."

The source, however, refused to divulge details about the talks, arguing that publicity "may ruin the efforts to diffuse the crisis". He also refused to name the UML leader who accompanied Khanal during the meeting.

Party leaders, who often attend meetings convened by former royalist leaders when political developments take a serious turn, prefer to keep such things secret.

A few months back, former prime minister and Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala and Maoist chief Dahal held a secret meeting at the residence of Lok Man Singh Karki, chief secretary during the king´s direct rule. Karki had invited them to a saptaha [week-long religious ceremony] at his residence.
