KATHMANDU, Aug 9: Costa Rica authorities have arrested seven Nepalis in southern Costa Rica near the border with Panama last Sunday.

According to lainformacion.com, a Spanish website, they were arrested when security forces stopped a vehicle driven by a Costa Rican named Ledezma, suspected to be a smuggler, and carrying them. [break]

Authorities are investigating the case and suspect that the group of Nepalese came from a country in South America and headed for San Jose, the Costa Rican capital.

Foreign nationals are detained in a police station south of the country and are being provided care and feeding while their immigration status is resolved, the country’s security ministry has said.

The driver is in custody and is suspected of the crime of human trafficking, which is punishable up to eight years in prison.
