Sita Dahal, a remarkable woman whose influence extended far beyond her role as the wife of Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 69. She had been bravely battling an incurable complex type of Parkinson's disease for a prolonged period. While Sita was known as the chairman's wife, her contributions within the Maoist party during the time of armed insurgency earned her immense respect from party leaders and workers.

During an informal conversation with the media about a decade ago, Sita reflected on her role as a peacemaker within the party, emphasizing the importance of resolving intra-party conflicts for the cause of the country and the people. Her advice to Dahal and his then second-in-command, Dr Baburam Bhattarai, to distance themselves from negative influences showcased her astute understanding of the party's dynamics, earning her praise from party insiders.

Sita's impact went beyond being a supportive wife; she was a trusted comrade and fellow traveler in shaping Dahal's journey from a secondary school teacher to the renowned 'Prachanda'. The Dahal family has faced multiple tragedies in the past decade, with their eldest daughter, Gyanu, losing her battle to breast cancer, and their son, Prakash, tragically passing away six years ago. Sita's departure adds to the profound loss endured by the Dahal family. Party insiders suggest that these consecutive tragedies left her in deep sorrow, exacerbating her health issues, including Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and Parkinsonism.

Born in Hemja, Kaski, on July 5, 1954, Sita moved to Chitwan with her family at the age of eight. Despite not receiving a formal education, her understanding of society, politics, and the country rivaled that of educated women. Sita and Dahal were married in April 1969, and two years later, she became a member of the Communist Party. Balancing her husband's underground political activities with the responsibilities of raising their four children posed significant challenges, yet Sita embraced her role with grace and strength.

Sita's contributions as a mother, wife, political advisor, and activist are unquestionable. Maoist leaders, activists, and well-wishers all bear witness to her unwavering commitment and guidance. She possessed an extensive understanding of the political landscape, from Banaras to Thawang in Rolpa, and provided invaluable counsel to Dahal during both challenging and triumphant times.

Maoist leaders highlight Sita's pivotal role in resolving conflicts and disputes within the party during the People's War. Her exceptional coordination skills and ability to navigate crises made her a guardian figure for the entire party. Sita devoted her life to the communist movement, assuming various responsibilities at the district, regional, and central levels. As an advisor to the Maoist Center, she actively participated in underground politics following the outbreak of the civil war in 1996. Her loyalty to principles, advanced political awareness, and selfless dedication to the party, the people, and the nation serve as a shining example. Her unwavering commitment has left an indelible mark on Nepal's political history.

Unlike many other prime minister's spouses, Sita never sought power or attention for herself. She led a modest, low-profile life, far away from the public eye. Her legacy will continue to inspire many to uphold the values she championed throughout her life. She is survived by husband and two daughters –Renu and Ganga. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dahal and his family as they mourn the loss of their beloved wife, mother, and trusted political confidante. May Sita's soul rest in eternal peace.
