Writ petition demands law ensuring mercy killing

KATHMANDU, July 9: A writ petition has been registered at the Supreme Court demanding order for setting up constitutional and legal provisions to ensure right to death.



Advocates Uttam Prasad Rijal and Tankahari Dahal filed the writ petition to set up legal provisions for granting the right to death to people in irreversible coma and those having clinically useless existence.

The petitioners have argued that right to life should also be understood as the right to death. The petitioners have demanded legal provisions for mercy killing as per the desire of the person or his/her patron or family.


The petitioners have named Constituent Assembly, Legislature-Parliament, Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers as well as Ministry of Law and Justice as defendants.
