Gita´s seven years of life as a widow has come to an end with her second marriage. Her second husband, Ganesh Basnet, is not a widower, though. [break]
Gita, who has an eight-year-old son, did not elope with Basnet, and neither is her second marriage a love marriage.
The marriage took place with the consent of Gita´s parents and her in-laws. All her relatives and friends were invited to the wedding.
Basnet of Barahachetra, Sunsari, married Gita to change the way society views widows.
Basnet proposed the marriage to Gita´s brother Ishwar and father-in-law Prem Acharya. Both readily accepted the proposal.
Gita also accepted the proposal as the two were long-time friends.
The marriage took place in the temple as per the tradition. Though the wedding ceremony wasn´t pompous, all relatives and friends were invited.
“I have rarely seen the marriage of a widow. This marriage was an ideal one,” said Guru Dhakal, one of the invitees. Gita´s uncle Balaram Banstola said culture should change with time.
