KATHMANDU, April 28: Given the political chaos and the Maoist rally in the Valley on Tuesday, some foreign diplomatic missions in Nepal went on a security alert and sent their staff home for the day earlier than scheduled.

The United States, Norwegian and Swedish embassies shut at 3 p.m. while the British embassy closed at 4 p.m.

The embassies officially cited the Maoist rally as the reason for their unscheduled early closure.

A US embassy message read: A Maoist rally has been called for in the area around Ratna Park this afternoon at 4 p.m.. In anticipation of the disruptions and the potential for violence, the Embassy has authorized an early closure of the Embassy at 3 p.m. today and is sending all Nepali personnel home. Private American citizens in Nepal are also advised to exercise extreme caution this afternoon and to avoid demonstrations if they come upon them.
