"Such a consensus would avoid a constitutional crisis and ensure that the hard work already invested in the peace process is brought to a fruitful conclusion," US Ambassador to Nepal Scott H DeLisi said in a statement on Friday. [break]
The US envoy spoke to Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal to urge him and the Maoist leadership to do everything possible to ensure that the May Day rallies are held peacefully.
The US call for political consensus followed similar requests by the international community, including the European Union.
The US envoy also reminded political parties that Nepal has come a long way since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which ended the Maoist armed conflict, and cautioned the parties that the achievements made after the accord should not be lost.
"The priority now is for the UML, the Nepali Congress, the Maoists, and the other parties to work toward a permanent peace and resolve the critical issues facing the country -- the drafting of a constitution and the conclusion of the peace process," the ambassador said.
