Upper Tamakoshi to pay compensation

DOLKHA, July 30: Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project has said it will pay compensation to the family of Bandana Khadka and her daughter Goma of Gaurishanker village who went missing in the Rolwaling River Wednesday after a makeshift cable contraption snapped.



The villagers are forced to cross the river using the makeshift cable contraption for the past two years after a metal bridge over the river collapsed during construction of road for the hydropower project. [break]



Apart from paying compensation, the project is also going to set up a scholarship fund in Goma´s name at Gaurishanker Higher Secondary School. Goma was an eighth grader at the school.



"The incident has left us speechless, therefore we have decided to pay compensation to the victimized family," Mrigendra Bahadur Shrestha, the chief of the project said. He said the project board would soon take a formal decision regarding compensation and schlorship fund.



The project will also restore the bridge by next year, Shrestha said.



According to DSP Umesh Raj Joshi, Khadka and her daughter have not been found despite two days of search by police and locals.
