Talking to CA members of Karnali, Seti and Mahakali zone, who had gone to the Prime Minister´s Office to hand over a memorandum, Dr Bhattarai said: "the Government is not ready to move ahead any project that is against national interest, and no work would be carried out against the spirit of the local people."[break]
Earlier, handing over a memorandum on behalf of the CA members representing the region, UCPN (Maoist) Politburo member Khadga Bahadur Biswakarma said the upper Karnali project should be operated locally and no foreign company should be involved in it.
The western Seti and upper Karnali hydropower projects should be established on the basis of a public-private-cooperative partnership, he said.
He also argued that the agreement reached with Indian hydropower company, GMR was against the interest of Nepal, and demanded that it be scrapped.
Dharmendra Bastola, also a politburo member of Maoist party, said the Nepali people are capable enough to run the upper Karnali hydel project.
CA member Nawaraj Koirala of Nepal Workers´ and Peasants´ Party and President of Karnali Watershed Preservation Society, Lok Bahadur Rawat also voiced against handing over the operation of hydro-electricity in the region to foreign companies.
