“Our party is shocked at the presidential endorsement of the Constitutional Council’s recommendation, which came despite our protest, to appoint him (Karki) to the post ,” reads a press statement issued by the party after its central committee meeting today. [break]
The party described the move as undemocratic and as against spirits of the 2006 people’s movement. The UML Politburo on Monday had written to President Ram Baran Yadav urging him to reconsider his approving of the CC recommendation.
Defying stern public protest, Karki, who in capacity of chief secretary tried to suppress the 2006 movement, was sworn in as chief commissioner of the anti-graft body amid a special function at the president’s office in Shital Niwas this morning. An inquiry earlier had also declared Karki as unfit for holding public office in the future.
