KATHMANDU, April 17: An active member of the Jhapa kanda, which is considered the first armed revolt by Nepali communists against local landlords, Diken Rajbanshi, hanged himself to death on a tree on the premises of the CPN-UML headquarters in Balkhu on Saturday.

Rajbanshi, who was in his late sixties, came to Kathmandu some two months ago from Jhapa, seeking support from the party leaders to find a job for his son, said Chandra Dev Paswan, a UML member working at the party head office. Rajbanshi was staying at the party headquarters. [break]

"Though a job for his son had almost been confirmed, he seemed frustrated due to hassles faced in the capital city. No other clear reason has been found behind his suicide so far," Paswan said.

During the Jhapa revolt 40 years ago, he worked together with the communists who raised arms and assassinated nine local landlords. Senior UML leader KP Sharma Oli, CPN-ML General Secretary CP Mainali, Radha Krishna Mainali and Mohan Chandra Adhikari were the ones who led the movement.

"He actively supported the movement. Many times, he provided shelter to us. He was jailed as he himself worked as an active member of the movement," CPN-ML leader Mainali told Republica. "I can´t remember for how long he was jailed, but it is certain that he was imprisoned."

He was active in the CPN-UML in Jhapa until the recent years. As he grew older, he remained only a sympathizer of the party. "I wasn´t in contact with him in the recent time mainly after the UML vertically split into two parties and I started leading CPN-ML," Mainali said.
