KATHMANDU, May 30: A senior British official Wednesday said Britain was disappointed over the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly without promulgating a new constitution.
"We are disappointed. I think many people are disappointed. At the end the agreement was not reached. That is a setback," said Simon Fraser, permanent under secretary at the Foreign and the Commonwealth Office. [break]
Speaking at a press conference at the British Embassy, Fraser, who was in Kathmandu for a two-day visit, urged political parties to come together to bail the country out of the present situation.
"I hope it is not for the British government to suggest the way forward but I do hope the parties will come together and consider how they can salvage [the country from the present situation]," Fraser said.
Yet, Fraser said the political development would not affect the UK aid to Nepal.
During his stay in Nepal, Fraser met political leaders and Foreign Secretary Durga Bhattarai.
Pascoe briefs UNSC about Nepal
Under-Secretary General of the United Nations for Political Affairs B Lynn Pascoe on Tuesday briefed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) about the dissolution of Nepal´s Constituent Assembly (CA) without promulgating a new constitution.
His briefing comes a day after UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon voiced his disappointment over the CA dissolution, according to the UN Department of Political Affairs. It has been understood that Lynn Pascoe presented a brief information to UNSC regarding the dissolution of the CA and the political and constitutional crisis facing Nepal.
