A meeting of UDMF—Madhesi People’s Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D), MPRF-Republican, Sadbhawana Party, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) and TMDP-Nepal--held in the capital Thursday evening concluded that a national consensus government should be formed under the leadership of a party that can garner necessary support.[break]
“If no party garners support for a national consensus government, the prime minister should be picked from beyond the political parties,” said SP Chairman Rajendra Mahato, who is also Health and Population Minister.
According to Madhesi leaders, the meeting concluded that they should not lend their support to a particular party to lead the government but rather support a party that can take all the parties into confidence.
Mahato said only a national consensus government can hold fresh CA polls. “Avoiding new CA elections will not be acceptable to us under any circumstance,” he added. The meeting also stated that political consensus already reached among parties on disputed issues of the new constitution should be kept intact and included in the new statute.
“Political parties should not waste time forging consensus on the same thorny issues that have already been resolved in the past,” he said.
The Madhesi alliance also concluded that the contentious issues of the new constitution should be settled through voting in the new CA if parties failed to forge consensus over them. “We should not repeat the same thing again, neither forging consensus nor going for voting to resolve issues, as the NC and CPN-UML did in the past,” Mahato stated.
