“Our preliminary investigation has revealed that they were less of drug abusers themselves and more involved in smuggling,” said Chitwan District Police Chief, Pradhumna Karki.

A police source added that the soldiers were involved in smuggling of these drugs for quite some time now as it was an easy task for them as both were usually deployed at check posts. “They were supplying the drugs to various dealers in Tanahu, Mungling, Dhading and Chitwan,” said the source.

Karki told Republica that lately they have been encountering numerous cases related to drug abuse and peddling after they tightened surveillance.

“Last year, we had arrested 24 people in the charge of drugs peddling. But we have already nabbed 59 drug peddlers this year,” said Inspector Jibalal Chudani.

According to the police, there are a total of 2,171 drug abusers in Chitwan and this number is also increasing rapidly
