KATHMANDU, April 25: A group of users of popular microblogging site, Twitter, on Saturday helped Pabitra Sewa Samaj (PSS), an orphanage run by Dikchhya Chapagain by providing stationeries, food items, kitchen utensils and clothes.

This was the first mission to help PSS by the young Twitter users, who formed a loose group known as Tweet for Cause Nepal (tfcNepal) with an aim of contributing fund to bring smiles on the faces of underprivileged people. The aid worth Rs 16,000 was contributed by the members of tfcNepal.[break]

“tfcNepal was formed after we questioned ourselves the motive of writing twitter messages,” Pramod Neupane, a co-initiator of the campaign, said. “We agreed to contribute at least 20 paisa for every tweet we write and we are a group of over 150 Twitter users now.” He further added that tfcNepal would continue its campaign.

PSS currently has 17 children studying from Grade I to IV and a child who was found abandoned and sent in there by the then SP of Kathmandu Ramesh Kharel. It also has a differently-able child who is receiving treatment. The orphanage is housed in two rooms provided to it by Tilangtar Secondary School, Dhapasi.

Chapagain, originally from Taplejung, formed PSS six years ago after she picked up of a child from street. “I saw him from the bus on the street eating banana peels and I brought him to my room,” she recalls, adding, “Then, many things happened; more children came and suddenly I was mom of many, though I am still unmarried.”

“I know now that you don’t have to give birth yourself to love children like your own,” she shared.
