In order to identify the stakeholders´ role in preparing strategy and programs for adaptation and mitigation of the effects of climate change, the Central Department of Environmental Science, TU, organized a one-day seminar on What after COP-15? Nepalese role in Climate Change.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Environment Thakur Sharma said that the national policy on climate change will be launched through the National Adaptation Plan of Action (NAPA). He added that the shortcomings of COP-15 will be considered for COP-16 through the alliance of mountainous countries. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal had announced the formation of such an alliance at COP-15.
A statement issued by the department also said that the environmentalists during the seminar raised concern on the “lack of adequate scientific data on climate change issues”. Vaskar Karki, senior climate change officer of ICIMOD, advised that the department should generate more authentic data and interpret them in collaboration with academic institutions instead of taking an activist approach.
Dr Madan Koirala, professor of Environment, focused on the need for researches on adaptation and mitigation of climate change, and inter-university studies.
Associate Professor Kedar Rijal said the department will collaborate with government and I/NGOs for generating research-based database on climate change studies.
