DHANGADHI, April 29: Businessmen in Kailali shut down Kailali Bazar on Thursday to protest Maoist extortions in the name of Janaandolan III.

Businessmen said the Maoists have issued threats traders from cart-pullers to big businessmen to provide donations.

“The Maoists tried to extort money. The strike was called spontaneously,” said Khem Bahadur Saud, Secretary of Attariya Market Management Committee.

Despite central Maoist leadership´s claim of not having extortion policy, he said Maoists have been extorting money ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 500,000 from traders. He said the Maoists have threatened to vandalize their shops if they refused to provide donation.
