Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) had started the project November, 2008, to ease traffic on Koteshwar intersection.

Saroj Kumar Pradhan, manager of the project, said the first phase of the road has been handed over to the government as a trial. “We have formally opened the first phase of the road even though the project is far from completion,” Pradhan added.

He said they would study traffic flow and response of public, transport workers and other stakeholders so that can revise the design of the remaining part if necessary.

“We have built the 14-meter road to enhance traffic capacity and improve public transportation system,” he added.

The total cost of the project has been estimated at 2.5 billion Japanese yen (approximately Rs 2.14 billion).

“About Rs 740 million has already been spent. Construction works are going as per the schedule,” Pradhan said.

Pradhan said they have felt the necessity of constructing overhead bridges at 11 points, including Koteshwar, Jadibuti and Thimi (in font of SAARC TB Research Center), along the Tinkune-Surya Binayak road.

The project is expected to complete by March, 2011.
