KATHMANDU, July 10: Police arrested three more people from Kathmandu—two businessmen and a vehicle owner— in connection with the smuggling of gold from Khasa, Tibet on Wednesday.
Earlier in the morning, acting on a special tip-off, a team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police nabbed a container truck driver from Koteshwor with 35 kgs of gold that was being smuggled into the capital from Khasa, hiding in the vehicle.[break]
The recent arrests include those of businessmen Ghyaljo Lama, 57, of Bauddha and Mohan Kumar Agrawal, 47, of Kalikasthan and the truck owner, Om Bahadur Bajracharya, 42, of Chuchchepati, Kathmandu following a preliminary investigation.
Organizing a press conference earlier in the day, DIG at CIB, Prakash Aryal informed that police seized the gold and detained the container driver, Nima Tsering Tamang, 24, of Sindhupalchwok from Koteshwor at around 5.30 am today.
According to Aryal, police also recovered Rs 16,700 and $ 100 in cash from the driver. CIB has also impounded the container (Ba 3 Kha 2570). The price of the gold is more than Rs 170 million in Nepali market.
