KATHMANDU, Feb 12: Thousands of passengers have been stranded due to locals’ protests at the East West Highway in Rupandehi district since Wednesday.

The local people blocked the highway after 25-year-old Mitresh KC, a local from Drivertol Shankarnagar near Butwal, was killed Wednesday night after being hit by a vehicle.

His kin and locals have blocked the road by placing the body on the road. They have demanded one million rupees in compensation for the bereaved family.

“Talks are under way. Vehicular movement is expected to resume soon as the authorities and agitating groups are near an agreement soon,” said Police Control in Kathmandu.

No vehicles are plying the highway as protestors have barred even ambulancs from operating, locals said.
