TeleTalk: Bringing mobile technology to rural folks

KATHMANDU, Aug 25: Mobile phone today has emerged as a must have gadget for people from all walks of life. At a time when more and more people are getting connected through mobile technology, companies in Nepal too are playing a greater role in putting technology in the hands of customers across the country.



TeleTalk Pvt Ltd - the authorized distributor of Spice, Colors and HTC mobile phones in Nepal -- is one such company that has been able to tap the rapidly growing telecommunication and information technology market Nepal and has been able to reach to customers throughout the country by providing mobile technology at affordable rates. TeleTalk is expanding quality mobile service to middle and lower-middle class individuals by providing quality handsets at cheaper rates.



Established just two years ago, TeleTalk claims to be the first mobile company in Nepal to introduce Indian mobile phones by popular Indian brand Spice and to introduce both CDMA and GSM handsets to consumers.



The company´s ability to hand on latest technology at an affordable price rate is what makes it stand out from the crowd of mobile distributors in Nepal.



Customers from outside the valley make up almost 60 percent of TeleTalk´s total costumers base. The company is also the market leader in dual-SIM handsets (GSM +CDMA). Dual-SIM sets make up almost 99 percent of the total handsets sold by the company.



“There is a huge prospect for mobile phone business in the country as locals in rural areas are also embracing new trends in technology like the people in the capital. A larger mass of our rural populace is embracing mobile technology that helps them get connected and at the same time increase business possibilities,” said Sanjay Agrawal, director of TeleTalk Pvt Ltd.



Agrawal informed that the strong sales network of the company has enabled it to venture into CDMA mobile handset market with an impressive range of cheaper handsets.



“CDMA mobile phones are hugely popular amongst the rural population,” Agrawal said, adding, “Our focus on effective promotion of our products among rural mass is one of the reasons behind our success in such a short span of time.”



Of the brands represented by TeleTalk, Spice mobile phones are priced between Rs 2,200 to Rs 25,000, while handsets by Colors are available in the range of Rs 2,100 to Rs 10,000. Handsets by HTC -- the premium Taiwanese brand for businessmen and high income people -- however are priced between Rs 17,000 to Rs 55,000.



The sales of Colors and Spice handsets are growing at an annual rate of 5 to15 percent respectively, according to Agrawal. He further informed that TeleTalk aims to capture 15 percent of the total handset market of the country by 2011.



TeleTalk believes that proper marketing strategy and excellent after sales services are the basic requirements for the company to survive in the competitive market. The company plans to provide better after sales services by coming up with service centers across the country.



“We recently opened up a service center in Itahari and will be expanding the service to Kohalpur within 10 days. We will have eight to 10 service centers across the country,” Agrawal said, adding that that the company will also be giving back to the people through its various corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the future.
