Sri Upadhyaya, who authored as many as 12 books in Nepali to his credit till date is a avid reader. He has read books in Assamese, English, Hindi and Nepali and has been writing in Nepali, English, Assamese and Hindi for periodicals and monthly journals being published from different parts of India.
Upadhyaya was the president of the first conference of Akhil Bharatiya Nepali Bhasha Samiti held at Udalguri town way back in 1974-75 which echoed the demand for inclusion of Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of Indian Constitution. Since then, he joined the struggle for the recognition of Nepali language in the Constitution of India which was realised on August 20, 1992.
Meanwhile, Asom Nepali Sahitya Sabha congratulated Upadhyaya on his selection for the prestigious literary award which would be presented to him in New Delhi in August.

A retired principal of Udalguri Higher Secondary School in Udalguri town, Upadhyaya has been serving as honorary principal of Udalguri B.Ed College in Udalguri. Upadhyaya is also the president of Udalguri district committee of Asom Nepali Sahitya Sabha.
