Tamang siblings lead Army Club to title

KATHMANDU, April 6: Ratnajit Tamang and his sister Sara Devi reached another milestone in national badminton on Saturday as the siblings helped Tribhuvan Army Club secure six of the 10 gold medals up for grabs to lift the title of Li Ning 36th National Badminton Championship.



Ratnajit claimed three golds while Sara Devi won two golds on the final day of the tournament. The pair had won the singles titles in the Ninth Krishna Mohan Memorial Badminton Championship earlier this year as well as in the Second Pushpalal Memorial Ranking National Badminton Championship held last year.[break]



On Saturday, Ratnajit registered a hard-fought 25-23, 21-19 win over defending champion Bikash Shrestha of Bhojpur in the men´s singles final held at the National Sports Council´s covered hall, Tripureshwar.



Ratnajit had earlier teamed up with his sister Sara Devi to claim gold in the mixed doubles category. The pair defeated Pooja Shrestha and Indra Mahata of APF 21-11, 21-13 in the final.



Ratnajit also clinched gold in the men´s doubles along with his club-mate Ram Rai to complete his three-gold haul in the tournament. They defeated the pair of Suroj Maharjan and Dipesh Dhami 17-21, 21-12, 21-16 in the all-Army final.



Meanwhile, Sara Devi of Tribhuvan Army Club claimed her individual gold defeating her sister and club mate Nangsal Devi Tamang 21-18, 21-16 in the women´s singles final.



However, Sara Devi was denied a fairytale end as the Tamang sisters lost the women´s doubles final 21-18, 17-21, 21-15 to Pooja Shrestha and Sabina Panthi of APF.



Megha Chand added another gold for Army Club as she defeated Jessica Gurung of Jhapa 21-18, 21-8 in the U-15 girls´ singles final while Dipesh Dhami of Tribhuvan Army Club claimed gold in the U-17 boys´ singles event defeating Sawan Shrestha of Sunsari 21-12, 21-10 in the final.



In the U-17 girls´ singles final, Shiksha Shrestha of APF defeated Ganga Bista of Kailali 21-13, 21-9 to claim gold.



In an all-Bhojpur affair, Nabin Shrestha ousted Bishal Tamang 21-17, 21-14 to lift the U-15 boys´ singles title.



In the veterans´ doubles section, APF pipped NPC for gold.



APF finished the tournament with three golds and one silver while Bhojpur finished third with one gold and two silvers.
