NEW DELHI, May 11: Suspected Maoist rebels killed 10 policemen in a landmine blast in insurgency-hit central India on Monday, an official said. [break]

The police team was driving through a heavily forested area in the state of Chhattisgarh when their vehicle hit the mine.

"We have received reports of 10 policemen killed in the landmine blast," said state administrator R.P.S. Tyagi.

Eight policemen were seriously injured in the attack which took place about 90 kilometres (60 miles) south of state capital Raipur.

A heavy exchange of fire between policemen and guerrillas followed the blast, injuring several officers, Tyagi said.

India´s Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of neglected tribal people and landless farmers.

Their insurgency, which grew out of a peasant uprising in 1967, is active in more than half of the country´s 29 states.

The rebels, described by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the single largest threat to India´s security, use the forests of Chhattisgarh state as their base.
