Veterans´ TT team off to Bangkok

KATHMANDU: A 10-member Nepali veterans´ table tennis team left for Thailand on Wednesday to participate in the Seventh Asia-Pacific Veterans´ Table Tennis Championship to be held in Bangkok from July 4 to 7. Rabindra Joshi, Dharma Man Bajracharya, Kabita Joshi and Sudarshan Prasad Gautam will compete in the 50-59 years age group while Prajwal Kant Mainali, Dharma Shahi, Kapur Sharma Paudel, Panna Kaji Shakya and Mohan Das Basukala will take part in the 40-49 years age group. Meanwhile, Sanju Awal will attend the tournament as an observer. All Nepal Table Tennis Association President Chaturananda Baidya and newly-appointed table tennis chief coach Surendra Suwal bade farewell to the team on Wednesday.



Junior TT selection next week


KATHMANDU: All Nepal Table Tennis Association (ANTTA) is organizing a two-day qualifying tournament beginning next Friday to select junior table tennis players for the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship. According to ANTTA President Chaturananda Baidya, the governing body of Nepali table tennis will select 10 players for the regional meet set to be held in New Delhi, India from July 20 to 22. Three male and three female players will represent Nepal in the U-18 age group of the tournament while there will be two Nepali players in both boys´ and girls´ sections in the U-15 age group. The selection tournament will be held at the National Table Tennis Training Center in Lainchaur on July 12 and 13.



Kayastha, Thapa share lead

KATHMANDU: Madan Krishna Kayastha of Golden Gate College and Krishna Thapa of Gajurmukhi Chess Club shared the lead in the NECOS Second Nationwide FIDE Rating Chess Tournament after the completion of fifth round on Wednesday. Kayastha defeated Purnaraj Khadka and Punyaman Karmacharya in the fourth and fifth rounds respectively while Thapa beat Prakash Nepal and Bibek Thing in the fourth and fifth round matches. Kayastha and Thapa have five points each from five rounds. FIDE Master Bilam Lal Shrestha of Gajurmukhi won both his matches on Wednesday and lies in the second position with 4.5 points. Niraj Niraula of Jhapa also has 4.5 points from five rounds.



ITF team off to Malaysia


KATHMANDU: Three ITF taekwondo players left Kathmandu on Wednesday to participate in the Second Asian ITF Taekwondo Championship to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from July 5 to 7. The Nepali team includes Babu Saheb Balami (men´s 60-70 kg), Gayaji Khadka (men´s 50-55 kg) and Sima KC (women´s 45-50 kg). National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama bade farewell to the Nepali team amidst a function at the NSC premises on Wednesday.



Whitefield, St Xavier´s win


KATHMANDU: Whitefield College registered a 3-2 victory over Kathmandu Barsha College on Wednesday in The British College Cup football tournament. Bibhushan KC scored a brace and Sanjiv Rana Magar added another for the winning side. Rohan Dahal and Rakam Limbu netted a goal each for Kathmandu Barsha. Similarly, St Xavier´s College beat the host The British College 2-0. Sifar Rajkarnikar and George Prince Karki scored a goal each for St Xavier´s in the match held at the Buddhi Bikas Ground, Lagankhel.



Nepali athletes´ poor start in India

KATHMANDU: Nepali athletes made a poort start to the Asian Athletics Championships that kicked off on Wednesday in Pune, India. Nepali athlete Tilak Ram Tharu clocked 11.10 seconds to complete the men´s 100m sprint and finished the heat round only ahead of an Afghanistan athlete. Likewise, Dil Maya Karki completed the women´s 400m in 61.63 seconds. "We have to accept these results as poor. Probably the athletes were fatigued because of the train journey to India. Let´s hope they do better in their remaining events," said Sushil Narsingh Rana, the chief coach of athletics. Tharu and Karki are yet to compete in the 200m sprint while Keshari Chaudhary will participate in the 100m hurdles and triple jump event during the championship.



Nepal loses in mixed doubles at Asian TT

KATHMANDU: Nepal lost both its mixed doubles matches at the 21st Asian Table Tennis Championships being held in Busan, South Korea on Wednesday. The Nepali pair of Shiva Sundar Gothe and Selisha Khadgi received a bye in the first round but lost to Wongsiri Nikom and Muangsuk Anisara of Thailand in three straight games in the second round. Gothe and Khadgi lost the match 6-11, 1-11, 6-11. Similarly, another Nepali pair of Deep Saun and Manita Chitrakar also suffered a straight games defeat against Sharath Karr Achanta and Neha Agrawal of India in the first round. The Indian pair won the match with the scores of 11-9, 11-2, 11-8 on Wednesday.
