DHANGADI, May 30: With no ICUs and ventilators at hospitals in the district, deaths from snake bite have been rising in Dhangadi. Most recently, two locals of Dhangadi, headquarters of the district, died while being taken for medical treatment.

Hospitals here don´t have ICUs and ventilators for the treatment of snake bite and because of this many have lost their lives in the past, said a local.

"Despite this state of affairs, the government has taken no measures to solve the problem," said the local.

Many snake-bite victims are brought here in an unconscious state and we find ourselves helpless, informed Chairperson of the emergency department at Seti Zonal Hospital, Krishna Bohora.

"Patients who become unconscious after being bitten by snake should be kept in an ICU and inside a ventilator but we don´t have such facilities. Because of this, many patients die," said Bohora.

"Since we don´t have ventilators, we try pressing the chest of the patient to pump in air but this doesn´t work all the time," he added.

Not just Seti Zonal Hospital, but all government and private hospitals in the district lack these facilities, Bohora said.

"During summer, we encounter many snake-bite cases. Had we had these medical facilities, we would have saved many lives," he further said.

According to chief of Kailali District Health Office, Jay Bahadur Karki, only two hospitals in the district can treat snake-bite victims.
