Shrestha loses 2nd round match

KATHMANDU, July 16: Nepali player Ranjan Shrestha suffered defeat in the second stage of the World Taekwondo Championship that kicked off in Puebla, Mexico on Tuesday.



Shrestha defeated Bagabo Placide of Rwanda 6-4 in the first stage of men´s 58 kg weight category but lost to Poiseev Ruslan of Russia 4-6 in the second stage.

Shrestha and Ruslan were level on three points at the end of the second round of the second stage match but the Nepali player earned only one point in the third round, while the Russian added three points to win the match. [break]



According to Nepal´s team coach Deepak Bista, Shrestha was not feeling well and suffering from fever during the match. "He performed well despite illness. He won a match and put up a good challenge against the Russian," said Bista.



Another Nepali taekwondo player Arun Adhikari (men´s 54 kg) is set to take on a Bhutanese player in the first stage of the championship on Thursday while Gyani Chunara (women´s 57 kg) will face a German player on Saturday.
