Shiva teams-up to win Eastern Open Pro-Am

DHARAN, Dec 28: The team of professional golfer Shiva Ram Shrestha won the Pro-Am event of the Surya Nepal Eastern Open Golf Tournament in Dharan on Monday. [break]



Shiva Ram scored 34 stableford points on the par-70 Nirvana Country Club Health and Golf Resort, Dharan. He was drawn with amateurs Lokendra Rai (32), Kaji Rai (32) and Purna Limbu (33) for a total of 131 points.



The team of pro Sanjay Lama who earned 31 points and amateurs Rabindra Man Shrestha (33), Arjun Sunar (30) and Indra Rai (36) finished second with a total of 130 points. They left behind the team of pro Mani Rai on count back. Mani scored 35, and amateurs Santa Kumar Rai (35), Rajesh Rai (28) and Michael Rai (32) finished third with 130 points.



Rohan Hada, who scored 39 stableford points, won the best individual section award, ahead of Indra Rai (36). Jhuna Rai won the women´s section award with 33 points.



Other winners of the day were Patthar Rai (closest to the pin) and Rupesh Pariyar (longest drive). Professional golfers of the top three teams received Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively while the amateurs were awarded with trophies.







The top eight pro and top 24 amateur scorers were put into a draw and the highest totaling team of one pro and three amateurs were declared winners. President of Nepal Professional Golfers´ Association Rabindra Man Shrestha and Member of Sunsari District Golf Association Indra Lamichhane gave away prizes to the winners of the tournament organized by Nepal Professional Golfers´ Association under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd.



The main event of the Eastern Leg of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2009-10 will tee off on Tuesday, with 24 professionals across the nation and 17 amateurs vying for the championship. The pro event will be held over 54 holes in stroke play format.



The event carries a total purse of Rs 350,000 and the top three winners will receive Rs 72,000, Rs 46,000 and Rs 36,000. Others in the top 20 will also receive their share of cash prizes, while the rest will get consolation awards.



Winner of the first two events under the 2009-10 Tour, Rabi Khadka, defending champion Deepak Thapa Magar, top pro Shiva Ram Shrestha, who has been winless for the last nine months, are expected to get a stiff challenge from the local pros including Sabin Sapkota, who has stayed back in Dharan postponing his trip to Germany where he is a teaching pro, his younger brother Suman Sapkota, Mani Rai, Deoraj Pakhrin and Tham Bahadur Rai.
