The meeting also decided to coordinate with Indian boarder security, increase patrolling and keep the border area under surveillance to thwart smuggling activities, according to Eastern Regional Administrator Shankar Adhikari. Similarly, the meeting decided to monitor weaknesses on the part of security officials along the border.
"The meeting was mainly focused on cross-border smuggling. We discussed at length how to control the smuggling of weapons through the porous border," said Adhikari. "The meeting has decided to enhance coordination between Nepalese and Indian security officials and other mechanisms to contain smuggling activities. It has also decided to mobilize more manpower and step up security along the border," Adhikari added.
He informed that the security agencies along the border in the east have been directed to be more attentive to containing the smuggling of illegal weapons as the Constitution Assembly poll nears.
"We have directed the security agencies to be extra-cautious as the chances of smuggling illegal weapons are high at border points from where illegal goods and other stuffs are making their way into the Nepali market," Adhikari opined.
The meeting was participated by high ranking officials of the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and National Investigating Department as well as the chief district officers and the chiefs of revenue and customs.
Adhikari also informed that they would write to the central government as policy-related issues had figured in the meeting.
