KATHMANDU, July 13: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has said that a roundtable political conference would not resolve the political uncertainty facing the country. [break]

Talking to media persons upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport following a medical checkup in New York Saturday evening, NC President Koirala asked all agitating parties to come on board the election process. “They won´t come to any conclusion even if all political parties are in the roundtable conference,” he said.

Arguing that a fresh Constituent Assembly (CA) alone would help solve the political problems seen in the country, Koirala appealed to all agitating parties including CPN-Maoist to come on board the election process. “NC is ready to include all major parties in the High Level Political Committee,” he said. “Let us go to elections, sitting together on the HLPC.”

Koirala said that political parties that boycott elections would eventually perish. “Conflict won´t serve anyone´s interest. Fresh conflict will only push the country towards serious crisis,” he said adding that the international community, including China, India, the European Union and the US, also maintain that elections should be held by the scheduled date of November 19.

On the occasion, Koirala took exception to the allegations of former chief election commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokharel that the major parties had already reached an agreement to defer the election. “It does not suit a responsible person like a former chief election commissioner to make such irresponsible remarks,” he said. “There is now no suspicion that there won´t be elections. The election will be held on November 19.”

Koirala had left for the USA on June 27 for a follow-up medical checkup for his tongue at the New York-based Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he first underwent cancer surgery a few years ago. Doctors have advised him to visit the hospital every year for follow-ups.
