KATHMANDU, Aug 26: Experts have stressed the need for legally binding provisions to ensure people´s right to food. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Dr Somsak Pipoppinyo, country representative of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said legal provisions are required to protect the universal right to food.

Pipoppinyo also emphasized the need to shift focus on enhancing the access, availability and absorption capacity of the people rather than only concentrating on food production.

Barbara Ekwall, senior officer, Right to Food, FAO also said right to food is a basic human right which should be recognized by each government.

Biraj Patnaik, principal adviser on Right to Food, said food deficit occurs some time when the distribution system fails to supply available food grains in needy areas even though the market has sufficient food stock.[break]
