SINDHUPALCHOWK, July 8: The District Disaster Relocation Committee (DDRC) of Sindhupalchowk district has started relocating settlements at high risk of landslides.

The government has recommended relocating 5,200 people of 1,663 households in the district to the safer areas. However, some of the recommended safe areas are themselves at high risk of landslides. For instance, the government has recommended relocating 100 families of Liping and Rangbusar villages to Nadung of Tatopani. But Nadung itself is at high risk of landslide.

"Nadung is not safe as the place itself at the risk of landslides," said chief of the District Police Office DSP Bishwa Adhikari. The DDRC has stated the process to relocate six landslide-prone settlements to Toribari and Banskharka villages of Selang-1 in the district on Monday.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Balbhadra Giri, who is also the coordinator of DDRC, informed that 106 quake hit families have been relocated so far. "Security personnel have built makeshift structures for the victims," he added.

DSP Adhikari informed that 26 security personnel from the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army have been deployed in the areas to help the victims build temporary houses, toilets and manage drinking water, among others.

The DDRC has provided 50 tents and 22 tarpaulins to relocate people in landslide-prone settlements, while some locals have brought their old corrugated-sheets.

The government estimates that the cost of first phase relocation would stand at Rs 470 million.

According to the DDRC, first phase relocation will be completed within two weeks.
