RAUTAHAT, July 3: Police have nabbed Bhairav Roy Yadav, former vice chairman of the now-defunct Tarai Army, which gained notoriety after carrying out several deadly bomb explosions in Kathmandu and Tarai.

Yadav, alias Shehensha, was nabbed by the Rautahat police shortly after he walked out of a jail in Gaur, where he had been serving a four-year jail term for carrying illegal weapons, on Friday. Rautahat police will now try Yadav at a district court for carrying out two blasts that killed five people in Chandranigahapur and Katahariya VDCs of the district four years ago.[break]

Earlier on September 27 2009, Yadav, now 47, was arrested by Sarlahi police for carrying an unlicensed pistol in Malangawa. He had been sentenced to four years in jail for possessing illegal weapons. As Malangawa jail was under-construction in 2009, he was shifted to Birgunj jail. On June 8 this year, Yadav was shifted to Gaur jail. According to police sources, the District Security Committee of Rautahat had lobbied for Yadav´s transfer to Gaur to help police nab him immediately after his release.

According to the police, Yadav masterminded a bomb blast that killed three people, including two children, in front of a guest house in Chandranigahapur VDC-1 on October 14, 2008. Shila Devi Sinjali, 22, from Judibela VDC-3 of Rautahat, her two-year-old daughter Susti and three-year-old Bibash Thapa of Simara-4 in Bara were killed in the Chandranigahapur blast. On January 25, 2009, Yadav allegedly carried out another blast that killed two people in Katahariya bazaar. Jaya Narayan Mahato, 35, a farmer from Karkach Karmaiya-4 and Hari Roy Yadav, 45, of Katahariya-1 were killed in Katahariya blast.

A former police constable, Yadav operated Tarai Army, once the most feared armed outfits of the Tarai, after his boss Mr John was killed in a police encounter.

The Tarai Army had also claimed responsibility for a blast that killed two school girls in Tripureshwor of Kathmandu in 2007. The blast was carried out apparently to thwart the Constituent Assembly elections the following year.

Yadav, who joined Nepal police in 1983, had retired as a constable in 2001. He first joined Jwala Singh-led Tarai Mukti Morchan, another armed outfit, before joining the Tarai Army. After Mr John was killed and Yadav was jailed, the Tarai Army has disappeared out of the scene. After Yadav was arrested, several Tarai Army members had surrendered to the police.
